Off-Grid Solar for Remote Properties: WA and Outback Setups

Australia has more genuinely off-grid land than any developed country. A rural block in the Wheatbelt, a beach shack in Denmark, a cattle station in the Kimberley — all sit outside SWIS (WA) or NEM (rest of Australia) coverage. For these properties, plug-in solar isn't a hobby, it's the entire electricity supply. This guide covers realistic sizing and configurations.

The two use cases

Weekender / holiday shack (light use)

Load: fridge, lights, phone charging, occasional pump. ~2 kWh/day. Kit: 400–800W panels, 2 kWh LiFePO4 battery, 1.5–2kW inverter. $2,000–$3,500. Payback: pure amenity value (no grid alternative).

Permanent off-grid dwelling (moderate use)

Load: full-time fridge/freezer, lighting, laptops, water pump, small aircon at times. ~8–12 kWh/day. Kit: 3–5 kW panels, 10–20 kWh battery, 5 kW inverter/charger. $12,000–$25,000. Payback vs alternative (diesel gen + monthly diesel): 5–8 years.

The plug-in angle

For weekender-scale setups, portable plug-in kits (panels + power station) work brilliantly. EcoFlow, Anker and Bluetti sell 2–5 kWh integrated units that arrive ready to use. No electrician, no permits, no CEC.

For permanent off-grid, you're into custom-designed systems territory — typically:

• Panels: rigid, roof or ground-mount, MC4 to combiner box
• Charge controller: Victron or Outback MPPT
• Battery: BYD, Pylontech, or DIY LiFePO4 cells
• Inverter/charger: Victron MultiPlus, Outback Radian
• Backup: small diesel or petrol generator for extended cloud

WA-specific note

Western Power's SWIS covers Perth to Geraldton and south-west corner. Everything else is "off-SWIS" — Horizon Power's territory or genuinely off-grid. Horizon Power runs subsidised solar programs for remote communities that plug-in kits can supplement.
