Plug-In Solar for Granny Flats and Secondary Dwellings

Granny flats, secondary dwellings and DA-approved backyard studios are a fast-growing housing category across Australia. Most are separately metered from the main dwelling, which means their electricity costs run on standard residential tariffs. A plug-in solar setup is a near-perfect fit — small footprint, no structural modification, portable if the tenant moves out.

Why granny flats suit plug-in solar

• Small floor area = small daily consumption (5–10 kWh) that 400–800W of solar can meaningfully offset
• Separately metered = savings accrue directly to the granny-flat electricity bill
• Typically not owner-occupied = tenants may not fund permanent installations, portable is neutral
• Often single-story with clear roof access = simple deployment

The typical setup

• 200–400W panels on tilt frame in the small garden or courtyard
• 1kWh portable power station (EcoFlow DELTA 2 or similar) inside the granny flat as backup + storage
• Panels connected to power station via MC4 — off-grid style, no need for AS/NZS 4777 compliance

Annual generation in Sydney: ~500–800 kWh. At typical peak tariff of 50c/kWh (self-consumed), that's $250–$400/year saved on the granny flat electricity bill.

Airbnb / short-stay units

For Airbnb operators, plug-in solar becomes a marketing point ("eco-conscious accommodation, solar-powered") as well as an operating expense reducer. Guests are often willing to pay 5–10% premium for sustainability claims.

Regulatory notes

Off-grid setups (panels → battery → loads) sit outside AS/NZS 4777 and don't require any approval. Grid-tied setups feeding back to the main switchboard do need CEC-accredited install. Most granny-flat plug-in setups take the off-grid route.
