Plug-In Solar in Victoria: FiT Rates and Where Portable Kits Fit

Victoria has one of Australia's most generous rooftop solar rebate programs (Solar Homes) and the highest solar penetration per capita. For plug-in kit buyers, the picture is more constrained — but there are still meaningful savings and a specific niche where portable makes sense.

The Solar Homes rebate (grid-tied only)

Victoria's Solar Homes program provides up to $1,400 rebate + interest-free loan for solar PV installations. Eligibility requires:

• CEC-accredited installer
• CEC-approved products
• Owner-occupier income limits
• Property valuation limits

Plug-in kits do NOT qualify. This is a rooftop-scale program.

Where plug-in wins in VIC

Where plug-in kits win in Victoria:

1. Renters — 26% of VIC households rent. Solar Homes doesn't help them. Portable plug-in does.
2. Apartments — no rooftop access, but balcony + battery works.
3. Seasonal/holiday properties — Mornington Peninsula, Great Ocean Road, Mansfield. Portable kits pay for themselves via avoided standing charges.
4. Off-grid weekenders — cabins, shacks, rural blocks without connection. Portable + battery is the entire setup.

Victorian FiT (retailer-dependent)

Feed-in tariffs in VIC are set by retailers, not the state. Range: 4–10c/kWh in 2026. Plug-in kits without formal interconnection can't feed-in — so this doesn't matter for the plug-in economic case anyway. Focus on self-consumption at typical peak rates of 45–55c/kWh (VIC peak evening rates are lower than NSW but still meaningful).
