December is the lowest-output month for solar. Here's what your plug-in kit will generate over the Christmas period.

December: The Low Point

December has the shortest days and lowest sun angle. An 800W system in the Midlands generates roughly 0.5-0.9 kWh per day — enough to power your fridge and a few LED lights, but not much more.

Christmas Energy Consumption

Christmas is a high-consumption period — lights, cooking, heating, and entertainment all spike. Your solar contribution will be minimal, but every kWh still counts.

Typical Christmas Day electricity use: 15-25 kWh (cooking turkey, lights, TV, heating). Your panels might contribute 0.5-1.0 kWh — roughly 3-5% of the day's needs.

The Silver Lining

You're almost certainly home during Christmas — meaning self-consumption is high. Even low generation is fully used.

January Recovery

By mid-January, days are noticeably longer. February sees generation roughly double December's output, and by March you're back to meaningful daily savings.


Should I worry about low December output?

No. December represents about 2-3% of annual generation. The other 10 months more than compensate.

Can solar power my Christmas lights?

Partially. LED Christmas lights use 5-20W — well within your system's December output. But only during daylight hours unless you have a battery.
