Why You Can't Use an Extension Lead with Plug-In Solar

The IPS v2 specifically prohibits extension leads for plug-in solar. Here's the safety reasoning and what to do instead.

The Rule

The Interim Product Specification v2 is explicit: a plug-in microgenerator must be connected directly into a wall socket. Extension leads, multi-socket adapters, and any intermediate connections are prohibited.

Why Extension Leads Are Banned

Overheating Risk

Extension leads have thinner cables than fixed wiring. When a plug-in solar system feeds 800W back through an extension lead, the cable heats up more than it would during normal consumption. Combined with the coiled cables typical of extension reels, this creates a genuine fire risk.

Contact Resistance

Every additional connection (plug into extension, extension into wall) adds resistance. Over time, connections loosen, corrosion builds, and contact resistance increases. Higher resistance means more heat at the connection point — a fire risk.

Water Ingress

Many plug-in solar installations run cables from an outdoor panel through a window or door gap. If the extension lead connection sits on a windowsill or near an open door, it's exposed to rain and condensation. Water + electricity + dodgy extension lead = serious risk.

What to Do Instead

Option 1: Route Cables to the Nearest Socket

Most plug-in solar kits come with 5-10m of DC cable from panel to inverter, and the inverter's AC cable is typically 1.5-3m. Position your panels so the inverter's plug reaches a wall socket directly.

Option 2: Install an Outdoor Socket

A qualified electrician can install a weatherproof outdoor socket (IP66 rated) near your panel location for typically £80-150. This is the safest option for permanent installations and is covered in our outdoor socket guide.

Option 3: Use Longer DC Cables

It's safer to extend the DC side (panel to inverter) than the AC side. Solar extension cables with MC4 connectors are designed for outdoor use and can safely run 10-20m.

Option 4: Move the Inverter Indoors

Some setups route the DC cables from outdoor panels to an indoor inverter positioned near a wall socket. This keeps the AC connection short and dry.


What About Indoor-to-Indoor Setups?

Even indoors, extension leads are prohibited. If your only suitable socket is across the room from where you want the inverter, install an additional socket on the same circuit (by a qualified electrician).

Can I use a surge protector instead of an extension lead?

No. A surge protector strip is effectively an extension lead with added protection. The IPS v2 requires a direct wall socket connection.

What if the cable from my kit isn't long enough?

Contact the manufacturer. Many kits offer longer AC cable options. Alternatively, extend the DC cable run rather than the AC side — see our cable management guide.

Will this rule be relaxed?

Unlikely. The safety reasoning behind the extension lead prohibition is sound and well-established in electrical safety practice. Even the more permissive German regulations advise against extension leads.
