Plug-In Solar Tripping the Breaker: Causes and Fixes

If your plug-in solar kit is tripping your RCD or MCB, here are the most common causes and how to fix them safely.

🇬🇧This article is relevant for the UK market

Why Your Solar Is Tripping the Breaker

If your plug-in solar system is tripping the RCD (residual current device) or MCB (miniature circuit breaker), it's a safety mechanism doing its job. Here are the common causes and fixes.

Common Causes

1. Earth Leakage from Wet Connections

Water in MC4 connectors or cable joints causes earth leakage current, which trips the RCD.

Fix: Check all outdoor connections for water ingress. Dry and reseal with IP68 cable glands. Replace damaged MC4 connectors.

2. Overloaded Circuit

If your solar system is on the same circuit as high-draw appliances, the combined load may exceed the MCB rating.

Fix: Plug the solar system into a socket on a different circuit. Each circuit typically has its own 32A MCB — your solar system alone shouldn't trip it.

3. Nuisance Tripping from Old RCDs

Older Type AC RCDs can be sensitive to the DC component in solar inverter output. Modern inverters are designed to minimise this, but older consumer units may still react.

Fix: An electrician can upgrade your RCD to a Type A or Type B, which handles DC components correctly (~£50-100).

4. Faulty Inverter

Rarely, the inverter itself has an internal fault causing earth leakage.

Fix: Contact the manufacturer for warranty replacement. Don't attempt to repair the inverter yourself.

5. Damaged Panel or Cable

Physical damage to a panel (cracked glass, exposed wiring) or a cable (cut insulation, crushed connector) can cause shorts.

Fix: Inspect all panels and cables visually. Use a multimeter to check for short circuits. Replace damaged components.

When to Call an Electrician

Call an electrician if:

  • The breaker trips immediately every time you plug in
  • You smell burning or see scorch marks
  • The consumer unit itself is hot
  • You've checked all the above and the problem persists

Is RCD tripping dangerous?

The tripping itself is a safety feature — it's protecting you. The underlying cause needs investigation, but the breaker is doing its job.

Will a certified kit like EcoFlow STREAM have this issue?

Unlikely. Certified kits are tested for RCD compatibility. If tripping occurs, it's more likely a wiring or consumer unit issue than the kit itself.
