Preparing Your Plug-In Solar for Winter 2026/27

Your first winter with plug-in solar. Panel angle adjustments, cleaning, storm preparation, and realistic output expectations.

🇬🇧This article is relevant for the UK market

What to Expect in Winter

Winter (December-February) is the lowest-output season for UK solar. An 800W system generates roughly 65-100 kWh over the three months — about 20% of annual output.

Month Typical daily output
November 1.0-1.5 kWh
December 0.5-0.9 kWh
January 0.6-1.0 kWh
February 1.2-1.8 kWh

Preparation Checklist

1. Clean Your Panels

Autumn leaves, bird droppings, and summer dust reduce output. Clean panels before winter using our cleaning guide.

2. Adjust Panel Angle

If you have adjustable mounts, increase tilt to 50-60° for winter. The lower sun angle means steeper panels capture more light. See our seasonal adjustment guide.

3. Storm-Proof Your Setup

UK winters bring high winds. Check all mounting brackets, tighten bolts, and ensure panels are secured against storms.

4. Check Cable Conditions

Inspect all outdoor cables for wear, cracking, or water ingress. Replace any damaged MC4 connectors or cables.

5. Clear Snow

Snow completely blocks solar generation. Gently brush snow off panels when safe to do so — never use hot water (thermal shock can crack glass).

Winter Economics

Winter generation is low but not zero. At 80 kWh over 3 months with 60% self-consumption:

  • Import saved: 48 kWh × 24.5p = £11.76
  • Export income: 32 kWh × 4p = £1.28
  • Total winter saving: ~£13

It's not much, but it's free electricity — and spring recovery is dramatic.

Should I disconnect my system in winter?

No. Even low generation contributes to your annual savings. The system handles low-light conditions automatically.

Will frost damage my panels?

No. Solar panels are designed for extreme temperatures (-40°C to +85°C). Frost doesn't affect them.
