UL 1741 vs IEEE 1547: What Plug-In Solar Buyers Need to Know

Anyone shopping for a US-market plug-in solar kit runs into two acronyms: UL 1741 and IEEE 1547. Both govern how a grid-connected inverter must behave. Neither is optional. Getting them mixed up is a common source of confusion for first-time buyers.

What UL 1741 covers

UL 1741 is the American safety standard for inverters, converters, controllers and interconnection system equipment for distributed energy resources. It's the certification you look for on a product's label — "UL 1741 Listed" means the inverter has been tested by an accredited lab against the standard's electrical safety, thermal, and grid-interaction requirements.

The two supplements that matter for modern plug-in kits:

• UL 1741 SA (Supplement A) — grid support functions like anti-islanding, voltage/frequency ride-through, and power quality. Required for any grid-tied installation post-2017 in most states.
• UL 1741 SB (Supplement B) — updated Cal Rule 21 / IEEE 1547-2018 compliance for California and increasingly other progressive states.

What IEEE 1547 covers

IEEE 1547 is the technical standard that defines HOW the inverter should behave — voltage, frequency, ramp rates, anti-islanding timing, ride-through curves. UL 1741 SA/SB test that the inverter complies with IEEE 1547.

Think of it this way: IEEE 1547 is the recipe, UL 1741 is the taste test.

Why the distinction matters when shopping

Some cheap imported inverters claim "IEEE 1547 compliant" without being UL 1741 listed. That means the manufacturer says they conform to the technical spec — but no accredited lab has verified it. Utility inspectors reject these routinely. Only UL 1741 listing (with the SA or SB supplement) counts as certified for US utility interconnection.
