Can You Use Plug-In Solar on a UK Allotment?
Most UK allotments have no mains electricity, so a plug-in microgenerator won't work there. Here's what actually powers an allotment shed legally.

Why the legal "plug-in microgenerator" category doesn't fit allotments
The new rules under SI 2026 No. 848 define a compliant kit very specifically: it has to plug into a standard BS 1363 socket that's part of a domestic property's fused wiring, capped at 800VA / 3.5A, with no extension leads and no battery in the plug circuit. The interim product specification is built entirely around the assumption that the socket you're plugging into sits on a house's ring main, protected by consumer unit fuses and earthed to the property.
An allotment shed almost never has that. The overwhelming majority of UK allotment sites have no mains electricity supply at all — councils and allotment associations generally don't run power to individual plots, partly on cost grounds and partly because permanent electrical installations on rented plots raise liability and safety questions they'd rather avoid. The alternative that actually works: portable, battery-based, and unregulated
The good news is that the thing most allotment holders actually want — some power for a radio, phone charging, LED lighting in the shed, or running a small water pump — doesn't need a grid-tied plug-in microgenerator at all. Most experienced plot holders take the power station home between visits and only leave the panel out, sometimes chained or locked to a frame, or bring both home if the site has a known theft problem.
