EcoFlow STREAM Ultra Pro Review: Is the Flagship Kit Worth It?
EcoFlow's top-tier plug-in solar kit tested against the standard STREAM and STREAM Ultra — here's who actually needs the Pro.
EcoFlow's STREAM range now has three tiers: the entry-level STREAM 800W kit, the mid-range STREAM Ultra, and the flagship STREAM Ultra Pro. Since plug-in solar became legal on 27 August 2026, STREAM has dominated UK sales, and the Ultra Pro is the version EcoFlow is now pushing hardest in marketing. This review covers what the extra spend actually buys you, and whether most UK households need it.
What's different about the Ultra Pro
The standard STREAM kit ships as an 800VA/3.5A plug-in microgenerator with a compact battery, built to the legal maximum set by SI 2026 No. 848 — 800VA output through a standard BS 1363 plug, no extension leads, no battery permitted in the plug circuit itself (the STREAM's battery sits on the generation side, before the plug, which is why it's compliant).
The Ultra Pro keeps the same 800VA/3.5A output ceiling — it can't legally exceed that through a single plug outlet — but adds:
- Larger internal battery (2kWh vs 600Wh on the base STREAM), giving genuinely useful evening coverage rather than a top-up buffer
- Faster charge controller with wider MPPT tracking range, which matters more in the UK's frequently overcast conditions than peak sunny-day output
- Stainless steel weatherproofing on all external connectors, rated for coastal and high-exposure installs
- App-based load scheduling with more granular control than the base STREAM app, letting you prioritise specific circuits
Compared with the mid-tier STREAM Ultra, the Pro adds the bigger battery and the weatherproof connector upgrade — the panels and inverter electronics are otherwise shared across the range.
Real-world output
Because every STREAM tier is capped at the same 800VA/3.5A legal ceiling, the Ultra Pro doesn't generate more electricity than the base kit on a given day — a common misconception. What it changes is when you get to use that electricity. The 2kWh battery means a sunny September afternoon's generation is still available to run the kettle, TV and lighting well after sunset, rather than mostly being exported or lost to base-load consumption during daylight hours when nobody's home.
For a typical semi-detached UK household, that shifts self-consumption from roughly 35-45% (base STREAM, small battery) to 65-75% (Ultra Pro), which is the single biggest lever on actual bill savings — more relevant than panel wattage for most owners. Our payback calculator can model this for your own usage pattern.
Installation and G98
Installation is identical to the rest of the STREAM range: plug into any standard 13A socket, no rewiring, no consumer unit changes. You still need to submit a G98 notification to your DNO within 28 days of commissioning — the Ultra Pro's larger battery doesn't change this requirement, since G98 applies to the generation capacity (800VA), not the storage capacity. Full walkthrough in our STREAM installation guide.
App setup follows the same process across the range — see our STREAM app and monitoring guide if you're setting one up for the first time.
- 800VA/3.5A plug-in kit with 2kWh onboard battery
- Stainless steel weatherproof connectors for coastal/exposed installs
- Wide-range MPPT for better cloudy-day charging
- Granular app load scheduling
Ultra Pro vs the competition
Against Anker's SOLIX RS40P, the Ultra Pro's main edge is battery capacity and the app ecosystem — Anker's kit is competitive on price but ships with a smaller battery at this tier. Who should buy the Ultra Pro
Buy it if: you're home during the day less than half the week, you want evening self-consumption to actually matter, or you're in a coastal/exposed location where the extra weatherproofing pays for itself in longevity.
Skip it if: you work from home and consume most generation during daylight anyway, or budget is the primary constraint — the base STREAM kit at roughly half the price still delivers the same legal maximum generation, just with less storage flexibility.
Does the Ultra Pro generate more electricity than the standard STREAM?
No. All STREAM tiers are capped at the same 800VA/3.5A legal maximum under SI 2026 No. 848. The Ultra Pro's advantage is a larger 2kWh battery, which lets you use more of that generation in the evening rather than losing it to daytime export.
Is the Ultra Pro worth the price difference over the base STREAM kit?
It depends on your daytime occupancy. If you're out at work most days, the bigger battery typically shifts self-consumption from around 40% to 65-75%, which usually justifies the premium within 3-4 years. If you're home all day already consuming generation directly, the base kit is the better value.
Do I still need a G98 notification with the Ultra Pro's bigger battery?
Yes. G98 notification requirements are based on the generation capacity (800VA for every STREAM tier), not the battery size, so the process and 28-day deadline are identical across the range.
