Plug-in solar goes legal on Thursday 27 August 2026 — four days before the August bank holiday. Here's how to use the long weekend to get installed.
The timing is almost too neat to be an accident. SI 2026 No. 848 — the statutory instrument that makes plug-in solar legal across the UK — comes into force on Thursday 27 August 2026. Four days later, on Monday 31 August, most of the country gets the last bank holiday of the summer. If you've been waiting for the law to change before buying a kit, that four-day gap is your window to go from "not yet legal" to "generating your own electricity" in a single long weekend.
This isn't a coincidence you need to plan around carefully — it's a gift of a schedule. Retailers have had stock sitting in warehouses for weeks, waiting for the go-ahead. The moment the legislation takes effect, B&Q, Currys, Screwfix, Wickes, Lidl and Amazon can sell compliant kits without any legal ambiguity, and you'll have a free Thursday-to-Monday stretch (plus the weekend either side, depending on your work pattern) to unbox, mount and switch on a system before autumn properly sets in.
Here's how to actually use those four days.
Thursday 27 August: legal day
This is the day the law changes — not the day you need to panic-buy. If you've already picked your kit during the run-up (see our 13-day countdown checklist if you're catching up late), Thursday is simply the day you can legally place the order and have a retailer legally sell it to you as a plug-in microgenerator rather than in the odd grey area kits have occupied until now.
Realistically, most people won't have a system on their wall by Thursday evening. Click-and-collect slots, courier delivery windows and stock levels at your local store all play a part. Treat Thursday as "order day," not "install day," unless you're collecting in person from a store with confirmed stock.
What to do on the day itself:
- Place your order online or collect in-store if stock allows
- Double-check the kit's spec sheet lists 800VA / 3.5A max output, a BS 1363 plug, and a 5A fuse — these are the legal limits under the new rules, not marketing numbers
- Confirm there's no battery built into the plug circuit itself (battery storage has to sit downstream of a separate, compliant connection, not spliced into the microgenerator plug)

Friday: the mounting day
Friday is when most kits will actually land, especially if you ordered for delivery rather than collection. This is your prep and mounting day — the unglamorous half of the job that's much easier done without weekend crowds or rain forecasts hanging over you.
Use Friday to:
- Check the delivery is complete and undamaged before you start drilling or clamping anything
- Confirm mounting location and angle — south-facing is ideal at this point in the year, but east/west-facing setups still perform reasonably well through early autumn
- Fit brackets, ground mounts or balcony rail clamps according to the manufacturer's instructions
- Route the cable to your chosen socket without any extension leads — the rules are explicit that the panel-to-plug cable supplied with the kit is the only cable permitted, full stop
Leave the actual plugging-in for Saturday if you're not confident you'll finish mounting with daylight to spare. Rushing the last hour of a mounting job in the dark is how brackets end up loose.

Saturday: switch-on and DNO notification
Saturday is switch-on day. Plug the unit into your chosen socket, open the manufacturer's app (if the kit has one — the EcoFlow STREAM and most competing systems do), and confirm it's registering generation. On a clear late-August day you should see meaningful output within minutes.
The other job for Saturday — and it's a legal one, not optional — is your G98 notification to your electricity network operator (DNO). This is a standard form confirming a small-scale generator has been connected to the network. It's a formality for a system this size, but it's still required. Don't skip this because it's the weekend. Most DNO notification portals are online and accept submissions any day of the week — there's no reason to leave it until Monday.
Sunday: settle in and check the app
Sunday is a good day to do nothing more than watch how the system behaves through a full day of UK late-summer weather — cloud cover, a few sunny spells, maybe a shower. This is useful baseline data. If output looks unexpectedly low compared to what the kit's rating suggests, it's much easier to troubleshoot mounting angle or shading now than in three weeks when you've stopped paying attention.

Monday 31 August: bank holiday, and your system's first full week begins
By the bank holiday itself, your kit should be mounted, registered and generating. Why this weekend specifically matters
Late August isn't peak solar season — that was June and July — but it's still a strong window. Days are shorter than midsummer but the panels aren't yet fighting low winter sun angles either, and with the Ofgem price cap sitting around 24.5p/kWh, every kWh a plug-in system generates through September is a kWh you're not paying for at that rate. Getting installed this particular weekend, rather than waiting until October, buys you a full extra month of decent generation before the clocks change.

Do I have to install on launch day itself?

What if my chosen retailer is out of stock over the bank holiday?
Demand is expected to spike hard in the first week. Do I still need to submit a G98 notification if I only install for the weekend and don't use it much at first?
Yes. The G98 notification requirement is based on the system being connected to your home's electrical network, not on how much you use it. Submit it as soon as the unit is plugged in and generating, regardless of how quickly you get around to relying on it day to day.
