Which Socket Should You Plug Solar Into? UK Guide
Not all 13A sockets are equal for plug-in solar. Here's how to choose the best socket and what the regulations say.
Socket Requirements
The Interim Product Specification requires your plug-in solar kit to connect to a standard BS 1363 13A socket on your home's fixed wiring. But which socket is best?
Best Sockets for Plug-In Solar
1. Kitchen Ring Main
Kitchen circuits are typically on a dedicated 32A ring main with an RCD. This is often the most robust circuit in the house.
2. Downstairs Ring Main
Lounge or hallway sockets on the downstairs ring main are good options — especially if the socket is near where the cable enters from outside.
3. Garage Socket
If your garage has a 13A socket on the house circuit, this is convenient for garage-roof or garden installations.
Sockets to Avoid
Extension Leads
Extension leads are prohibited by the IPS v2. Always plug directly into a wall socket.
Shared Sockets
Avoid double sockets where the other socket powers a high-draw appliance (kettle, heater). While the circuit can handle both, it's cleaner to use a dedicated socket.
Old Wiring
If your house has old wiring (pre-1970s), have an electrician check the circuit before connecting plug-in solar. Older circuits may not have adequate earth protection.
Outdoor Sockets Without IP Rating
Outdoor sockets must be at least IP44 rated if the plug will be exposed to weather. An IP66 outdoor socket is ideal.
Can I Install a Dedicated Socket?
Yes — a qualified electrician can install a new socket specifically for your plug-in solar system, typically for £80-150. This is the neatest solution for permanent installations.
- 800W dual-panel plug-in solar kit
- 600Wh battery with smart scheduling
- App monitoring with real-time generation data
- Balcony, garden & flat-roof mounts available
Can I use a socket on a spur?
Yes, a socket on a fused spur works fine for plug-in solar. Ensure the fuse is rated appropriately (13A standard).
What about RCD protection?
All modern sockets should be RCD-protected. If your consumer unit doesn't have RCD protection on the relevant circuit, an electrician can add it (~£80-120).
Does it matter which socket I choose on a ring main?
Not electrically — all sockets on a ring main share the same circuit. Choose based on convenience of cable routing.
