Plug-In Solar Warranty Guide: What's Actually Covered in the UK

What plug-in solar warranties actually cover in the UK, how long they last, and what voids them — before you buy a kit this week.

With plug-in solar going legal on 27 August 2026, thousands of people are about to buy their first kit within days of each other. Most of that attention is going on wattage, price and mounting options — understandably, since those are the numbers on the box. Almost nobody is reading the warranty terms before they check out, which is a mistake, because the warranty is the thing that decides whether a failed panel in year three is a five-minute phone call or a written-off £500.

The micro-inverter or optimiser. Cables, connectors and mounting hardware. Often the weakest link warranty-wise — many kits cover these for just 1–2 years, on the assumption that a household will notice and report a damaged cable quickly. Read the box or listing carefully: a kit advertised as having a "25-year warranty" almost always means the panel's performance warranty, not a 25-year guarantee on the whole unit. The inverter and cabling underneath that headline figure are usually covered for a fraction of the time.

What voids a plug-in solar warranty

Manufacturers write warranty exclusions with normal use in mind, but a surprising number of common DIY habits fall outside them:

  • Exceeding the stated output configuration. Wiring in an extra panel beyond what the kit specifies, or combining components from different manufacturers, is one of the fastest ways to void a warranty and, depending on the setup, breach the one-unit-per-household rule as well.
  • Second-hand kits. Warranties are typically tied to the original purchaser and a registered proof of purchase. If you're considering buying a second-hand system, check whether the warranty transfers at all — many don't.

Registering your warranty (don't skip this)

Most manufacturers require online registration within a set window — often 30 to 90 days of purchase — to activate the full warranty term. Miss it and you may be left with only a shorter statutory minimum. This is a five-minute job that's easy to forget in the excitement of getting a new kit mounted and switched on, so do it the same day you unbox the panel, not "at some point."

Keep hold of:

  • The original receipt or order confirmation
  • Serial numbers for the panel and inverter separately
  • Photos of the installed system, taken on day one, showing mounting and cable routing

That last point matters more than it sounds. If a claim ever comes down to a dispute about whether the installation itself caused a fault, day-one photos showing a compliant, manufacturer-approved setup are the strongest evidence you'll have.

Statutory rights on top of the manufacturer's warranty

The manufacturer's warranty sits alongside your statutory rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, which apply regardless of what the box says.
