10 Ways to Maximise Self-Consumption from Plug-In Solar

The more solar you use directly, the more you save. Here are 10 practical tips to maximise self-consumption in the UK.

Why Self-Consumption Matters

Every kWh you use directly from your solar panels saves you the full import rate (24.5p at the Ofgem cap). Every kWh you export earns only 3-6p via the SEG. Maximising self-consumption can double your annual savings.

1. Run the Washing Machine During Peak Solar

Set your washing machine to run between 11am-2pm when generation peaks. A typical cycle uses 1-1.5 kWh — easily covered by your 800W system.

2. Run the Dishwasher Mid-Day

Same principle — 1-1.5 kWh per cycle. Use the delay-start function if you're not home at peak solar hours.

3. Charge Devices During the Day

Laptops (60W), phones (10W), tablets (15W) — plug them in during solar hours. Small loads add up over a year.

4. Use Smart Plugs with Timers

A Tapo P110 or Shelly Plus Plug can schedule appliances to run during solar hours and monitor how much energy they use.

5. Set Your Immersion Heater Timer

If you have an immersion heater, running it for 30-60 minutes during peak solar can use 1-3 kWh — a significant portion of daily generation. This only makes sense if you'd otherwise heat water with imported electricity.

6. Pre-Cool/Pre-Heat Your Home

On sunny days, pre-cool with fans or AC, or pre-heat in spring/autumn. Your home stores the thermal energy for hours after solar generation ends.

7. Work From Home

Home office users typically achieve 70-80% self-consumption versus 35-50% for commuters. The base load of a home office (PC, monitor, router, lights) aligns perfectly with solar generation hours.

8. Use a Smart Home System

Home Assistant or similar can automatically trigger appliances when solar generation exceeds base load. Advanced users can create automations that start the washing machine only when generation is above a threshold.

9. Time Your EV Charging

If you have an EV, even 2-3 hours of daytime charging at 2.3kW (standard socket) uses 5-7 kWh. With an 800W system generating 3-4 kWh, you won't cover the full charge, but you'll offset a meaningful chunk. See our EV charging guide.

10. Monitor and Adjust

Use your inverter app or an energy monitor to see when you're exporting. Adjust your habits to shift loads into those periods.
