Plug-In Solar in September: What to Expect (UK)

September is the first month your new kit will generate. Here's what output to expect and how to maximise autumn savings.

🇬🇧This article is relevant for the UK market

September Solar Output

September is a transitional month — still decent sun but noticeably shorter days than summer. For an 800W plug-in solar system:

Region September daily average September total
South East 2.5-3.2 kWh/day 75-96 kWh
Midlands 2.2-2.8 kWh/day 66-84 kWh
North England 1.9-2.5 kWh/day 57-75 kWh
Scotland 1.7-2.3 kWh/day 51-69 kWh

September typically generates 70-80% of a peak summer month's output.

Your First Month: What to Expect

If you install the EcoFlow STREAM when it launches in September:

Week 1-2: System setup and calibration. The app will show generation data building up. Don't worry if initial readings seem low — the system needs a few sunny days to establish baseline performance.

Week 3-4: You'll have enough data to compare against PVGIS estimates for your postcode. Expect to be within ±15% of predicted output.

September Savings Estimate

Location kWh generated Self-consumed (55%) Saved
South East 85 kWh 47 kWh £11.50
Midlands 75 kWh 41 kWh £10.05
North 66 kWh 36 kWh £8.82

Optimising for Autumn

As days shorten, self-consumption becomes easier because you're generating less excess. Tips:

  1. Run washing machines mid-morning rather than midday — the peak narrows in autumn
  2. Check your panel angle — consider increasing tilt by 5-10° for the lower autumn sun
  3. Clean panels before autumn rain starts — accumulated summer dust reduces output
  4. Monitor for shading — trees with leaves and lower sun angles create new shade patterns

Is September too late to start?

No. You'll capture 6-7 months of reasonable generation before the winter months. An 800W system installed in September still saves £80-110 by the end of March.

How does September compare to March?

Very similar — both are equinox months with roughly equal daylight hours. September is slightly warmer (better for panel efficiency) but has more cloud cover on average.

Should I adjust panel angle for autumn?

If using adjustable mounts, increasing tilt by 5-10° in October captures more of the low autumn sun. See our seasonal adjustment guide.
