EcoFlow STREAM vs DIY Microinverter Kit: Cost Comparison

Is the EcoFlow STREAM worth the premium over a DIY Hoymiles/APsystems build? We compare total cost, ease, and warranty.

🇬🇧This article is relevant for the UK market

The Cost Comparison

The big question: is a certified EcoFlow STREAM worth the premium over building your own system with a Hoymiles HMS-800 or APsystems EZ1-M?

DIY Build Cost

Component Cost
2× 400W panels ~£200–300
Hoymiles HMS-800 or APsystems EZ1-M ~£200–250
MC4 cables and connectors ~£30–50
Mounting brackets ~£50–100
BS 1363 plug and cable ~£15–20
Total £495–720

EcoFlow STREAM Cost

Configuration Cost
STREAM 800W (panels + inverter + cable + plug) ~£499–599
STREAM 800W + 600Wh battery ~£799–899

The Real Difference: Legality

From 27 August 2026, only kits certified to the Interim Product Specification v2 are legal to sell and use. A DIY build using separate components is not a certified plug-in microgenerator and therefore doesn't comply with SI 2026 No. 848.

This doesn't mean enforcement will target individual DIY setups — the focus is on retailers. But it means your DIY build lacks the safety certifications, anti-islanding testing, and product liability coverage of a certified system.

Feature Comparison

Feature EcoFlow STREAM DIY Build
IPS v2 certified Yes (expected) No
App monitoring Yes Varies (DTU needed for Hoymiles)
Anti-islanding tested As complete system Component-level only
Battery option 600Wh Add separately
Warranty Full system (5yr+) Per component
Installation ease Plug and play Moderate DIY
Total cost (no battery) ~£499–599 ~£495–720

The Verdict

The STREAM is competitive on price with a well-specced DIY build, and it's the only option that's legally certified. The integrated app monitoring and battery option add further value.

The DIY route makes sense if you're technically confident, want maximum flexibility, and are comfortable with the legal grey area. The STREAM makes sense for everyone else.

Can I upgrade a DIY build to be compliant later?

Not easily. Compliance requires the complete system to be tested and certified as a unit. Retrofitting certification to a DIY build isn't practical.

What about warranty claims?

With a STREAM, you have a single point of warranty contact. With a DIY build, you're dealing with separate warranties from each component manufacturer.

Is the STREAM really plug-and-play?

Yes — it comes with everything you need including mounting hardware. Our installation guide covers the full process.
